Why you should do this course

Anything that is moving is going to vibrate. Even a "static" building or bridge will vibrate at it's resonance frequency. If a force is applied to a structure, such as an operating machine, an engine mounted to a wing, a machinery platform on a submarine, the structure will vibrate. As a mechanical engineer, it is important that you understand these concepts and can calculate the expected amplitude of vibration, and how to avoid potential problems, such as having a motor operating at a speed that coincides with a resonance frequency of a structure.

The course will cover these important concepts, about how to predict vibration responses of structures, including how to undertake a modal analysis to identify resonance frequencies and mode shapes (the displaced vibration "pattern" of the structure at the resonance frequency), concepts in vibration condition monitoring where a vibration "signature" can tell you what types of fault exist in a machine.

If you are interested in obtaining a greater understanding about the related topic of acoustics, then you should definitely do this course. This course, Advanced Vibrations, provides companion knowledge for the course Engineering Acoustics. The two subjects are heavily inter-related.
